Handmade Oak bench made from a tree blown over on the farm in the storm of '87.

For nearly 20 years the log lay hidden under nettles at the end of the yard, almost forgotten. Upon it's rediscovery I processed it on my own sawmill, and after several years air-drying I created the bench you see. The epitome of low carbon footprint. From acorn to finished bench the tree had traveled all of 400 yards!

Elm burr chair

Very simple but elegant three-legged elm chair made for a classical guitarist.

The seat is made from a single piece of stunning elm burr with the natural edge left on to give an organic feel. The front legs were made from machined elm slabs to contrast with the more fluid lines of the back support, which was made from a free-shaped small diameter elm trunk. By keeping the sinuous lines of the trunk, the aim was to compliment the natural shape of the seat to make a chair that was as much sculpture as it was a functional piece of furniture

A solid green oak bench to go in a children's play area.

The brief was to make a simple but solid piece of public access furniture for a local parish council with a relatively tight budget. The bench needed to be very robust and require little or no maintenance.

This bench is constructed using a mixture of traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints in conjunction with stainless steel fixings.

The simple slab seat was left with it's natural live edge to add contrast with the sharper lines of the machine shaped base. The base was constructed using a combination of doweled or wedged mortise and tenon joints, whilst the seat and back rest were attached using stainless steel fixings.
